HIGH STREET
High Street
Following the line of the Roman road between Dover and London, later known as Watling Street, portions of that Roman road still exist six to twelve feet below the modern road surface. Charles Dickens would have known 75% of the buildings you see today, and Oliver Cromwell fifty percent, as many facades received a make-over following the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and, as a result, we have a quite unique William and Mary period High Street.
From the boundary with Chatham to Rochester Bridge, 300+ businesses line the pavements. Of those, only five are national retail chains. This makes Rochester High Street a Mecca for anyone seeking a truly independent boutique shopping experience.
In recent years, the food offering has undergone a renaissance. With everything from gourmet burgers to gloriously indulgent Afternoon Teas – and everything in between – the choices for the gourmet are many and varied.
